    SITE OF THE MONTH

Each month we will share, with you, a website that we think is either fun or helpful (or both). Sometimes we will add it to our resources, other times it will appear only once.

Our website of the month is Story Line On Line This site introduces many books to children as a TV or movie star reads a book to them.

I really like this site, it can be explored by younger children with the help of an older person (little ones seem to be facinated with the mouse and keyboards of computer) or an older child (8-10) who want to hear and read along, a good story.

    BEREAVEMENT

In the early '90s St. Gilbert began a Bereavement Ministry. Most of my training evolved around children. I vividly remember one class I attended called, Children the Silent Mourners. And the main point is we should engage our children in conversation understanding that while their questions may be complicated our answers must be simple.

    Books

We grieve over many things - such as:
    • Loss of jobs
    • Broken relationships
    • Leaving home
    • Empty nest syndrome
    • As well as death

Maria Striver (yes the niece of Ted Kennedy and the California Governor's wife - who is also a journalist and mother of four) wrote a book called What's Heaven The girl in the story is Kate (Maria's oldest child is named Katherine.) Kate age six came home from school to find her mother crying. Kate asks, " What's wrong? " and her mother explains that her grandmother, Kate's great-grand mother has died and gone to heaven. When Kate asks " What's Heaven " a mother - daughter conversation begins.

When a person is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease the grief of a family is a long enduring process.

Sarge Striver, Maria's father suffered from Alzheimer's and her children began asking why he keeps telling the same story over and over again, why did he forget their names and why was he changing? What's Happening to Grandpa? was written to help family's explain.

What's Wrong with Timmy? is not a book on grieving but a book that will help parents answer those complicated questions a child may ask when they see a physically challenged person, Kate sees a boy who is different and asks her mom, what’s wrong with Timmy. When she gets to know him she realizes Timmy is just like her. He loves basketball and recess, they like the same things! Before long the two children are playing together and she realizes there is nothing wrong with Timmy.

Finally to touch on the " Empty Nest Syndrome " Maria Striver’s latest book, And, One More Thing Before You Go This book, full of love and advice, is written for daughters who have graduated high school and are heading for college or leaving home for other reasons.
